Nomadic steppe (q.v.) tribe settled north of the Black Sea (q.v.) until it was displaced by the Sarmatians (q.v.) in the second or first century B.C. However, the name survived in Scythia Minor, a province south of the Danube (q.v.), that flourished from the fourth through sixth centuries and included such prosperous cities as Histria (q.v.).
